Musically Untalented

I am good at many things in this world, I can cook half decently, I'm not bad at photography or writing but the one thing I can readily admit that I'm hopeless at is anything musically related. I can't carry a tune, my singing is awful and apart from a half hearted attempt to learn the recorder at primary school I can't play an instrument either. So with that knowledge in mind I'm sure you'll laugh at my latest purchase, a shiny acoustic guitar....

So this was one of my challenges, to learn to play the guitar and I hope to learn the basics and maybe get a grade 1 certificate.....as by the rules of my list. This in itself is a big challenge for me but it also got me thinking about music in general. It's amazing how a few little notes of a song can make you cast your mind back to memories of years gone by, to people you haven't spoken to or places you used to go. Everytime I hear those first few notes of Nakatomi's Children of the Night,

I'm transported back to Horncastle Town Hall and those Friday nights , where we used to tear it up on a weekly basis whilst being ever so slightly underage. Or maybe it's Rihanna's Titanium which takes me to a pirate ship in the Gulf of Mexico....soon to be renamed the Gulf of America if Mr Trump has his way. This has led me to make a list, we all know I love a list, of some of the songs that have special attachment to me.

Parklife - The Park on a Thursday night after another win for the mighty Team Park FC, the team on the dancefloor making prats of ourselves, under the influence of several aftershocks and £1 pints. Every time I hear those first chords I'm transported back there.

Cha Cha Slide - The dream ticket, election week, accusations of racism, and for some reason lots of dancing to this song. I fear these days I can't go as low as I used to but memories of a clean sweep for us.

I'm a Believer - Not the shrek version but the original by the Monkees...at every single Boston United home game from the early 90's right through to the 2000's this song for some reason was played at half time, I think possibly they only had one record but it takes me back to those days were the most important thing was a precious three points for The Pilgrims.

Pacific Ocean Blue - The song that nearly got me in trouble of Luton FM with it's naughty word in the first verse, a quick improvisation of a loud beep sound got The Rock 'n' Sock out of trouble thank god. Remembering those late night shows we did in that little studio with Amanda as our producer extraordinaire.

Mr Brightside - This is the song that made me realise that I was in love with my ex. We were in a club called Havana's and this song came on, she was singing (obviously much better than me) and the lyrics it was only a kiss and then she kissed me. It was then that I realised that I'd fallen for her, which I told her later that week after a drunken staff day out at Alton Towers.....but that is a separate story.

The Hindu Times - A quick quiet drink out before an early start for a trip to Alton Towers, that's what we said, roll on 2am, standing at the front of the stage belting out this tune, needless to say we were very much worse the wear when it came to our 6am start later that day. It should also be noted this was the night of the rough hand job......ask me and I'll spill the details.

SclubParty - How to describe this one? Imagine taking 7 of your closest friends and watching them try to sing and dance on stage in front of virtually the whole school. Add to this the fact that I'd organised the talent show and was laughing my socks off stage right while they muddled their way through the performance. Every time I hear pretty much anything by SClub7 I am transported back to the old school hall. As an added note it's well known I can't dance....yet I actually choreographed at least 40% of the act! Maybe I should become a talent agent?

Wake up boo - Lockdown was ending I was walking into work for the first time in months, I had my headphones on the sun was shining and it was indeed a beautiful morning... it lasted for about an hour and a half before I'd had enough and was wanting to go back home again after dealing with customers and the new rules that were imposed on us. But it was that feeling of being free after months of being locked in our houses as though we were being let out of prison.

So there's a few musical based memories based on events, I do have certain songs that remind me of people and maybe one day when I've learnt a few chords or feel like another musical based entry I'll share them!
